Confirmation Bias: The Echo Chamber Effect

Writer: Chris EastChris East

Confirmation bias is the psychological tendency to seek out information that confirms our pre-existing beliefs while disregarding evidence that contradicts them.

When it comes to radicalisation, this cognitive shortcut can have profound consequences. Individuals exposed to extremist ideologies are more likely to actively search for information that reinforces their newfound beliefs, creating an echo chamber.

Social media platforms exacerbate this phenomenon by curating content based on users' previous interactions. Algorithms prioritise information that aligns with a user's worldview, further isolating them from diverse perspectives.

As a result, individuals become increasingly entrenched in their extremist views, making it difficult to challenge their assumptions or consider alternative viewpoints. This echo chamber effect can lead to the radicalisation of individuals as they are bombarded with one-sided information that validates their extremist beliefs.
